The 7.5% encapsulated octinoxate represents an important innovation. Conventional octinoxate is an active with small molecular weight, roughly half a nanometer in size, and does get absorbed into the body. It has the potential to become an endocrine disruptor in both humans and in the living larvae that are essential to the health of coral reefs and is therefore NOT an ingredient CyberDERM would ever advocate using. However, the technology of encapsulation means that the active is doped into a completely harmless silica bead (derived from sand), making a small particle huge! It becomes 5000-7000 nanometers or more than 10,000-14,000 times larger than conventional octinoxate in size. It also means that the octinoxate does not come into contact with human skin or reefs therefore making it safe for daily use. This means it is completely unlike its conventional counterpart and actually has much more in common with large particles like zinc oxide. Moreover, it provides excellent UVB protection while also helping the zinc stay in uniform dispersion and is why CyberDERM believes it is an important addition to the efficacy of the formula.
