Carrey seems miscast; his humor tends toward confrontation, and he lacks the seductive charm that Russell s con games would seem to need (McGregor, who is charm embodied, might have been a better choice). But some of Russell s prison escapes are truly flabbergasting and it s refreshing to see a movie with gay characters that isn t about them wrestling with their sexual identities. The flow of the story feels much like a Coen Bros. movie (
Fargo or
Raising Arizona) with its vivid, quirky characters and unpredictable plot. Also featuring Leslie Mann (
Knocked Up) and Rodrigo Santoro (
300).
