Prepping the Surface

Sanding

You will need to sand down the wood until it is completely smooth. Use a 150 grit sandpaper and then finely sand it with 220 grit. Avoid applying vinyl to any surface with large imperfections, like wood with large, rough knots.

Cleaning

Wipe any dust off the surface, and wash the item if you can, even if it just means wiping it down with a damp cloth. Clean the surface with a combination of vinegar and water, an ammonia-based cleaner, or isopropyl alcohol to ensure all oils are removed.

Drying

Ensure the surface is completely dry before applying the vinyl. If necessary, leave the surface to air dry for a few hours to make sure all moisture is gone.
