This historically accurate working recreation uses a bevel gear, also from da Vinci s drawings, to spin the canopy and support structure, illustrating a way he thought flight might be possible. Leonardo da Vinci was a prolific inventor and artist who came up with new ideas and redesigned inventions from earlier times. While it is often referred to as a helicopter, the 15th-century Aerial Screw was designed to rise much like an Archimedean screw rather than a helicopter. The canopy and support structure is removable, so children can experiment with their own helicopter or other winged systems.This model is made from natural, untreated wood from sustainable forests.
